what is a needs assessment
a systematic process for creating a profile of the needs and resources of a given community or target population
what does the process of needs assessment produce
a clear description of the specific causes and conditions of an issue individuals and families are facing in a given community
the needs assessment process takes into consideration the
existing resources available in the community to meet the needs of its residents and the gaps in existing resources that are preventing improvement
why does our organization need to do a needs assessment
- to assess gaps in services and identify resources to address needs
- to determine if a particular program is needs
- to support organizational strategic planning
- to develop program priorities
- to support the need for funding
- to assist with program evaluation
other reasons for a needs assessment
- assure the organization that it is focusing its resources on the unique circumstances in their own community
- to avoid duplication of services and allow most effective use of organization’s resources
- challenge existing beliefs about whats needed
what may be a better idea then duplicating services
partner with existing organizations

recruit team members that have the following characteristics
- work will with others
- open minded
- have knowledge of community
- possess experience in community engagement, data analysis, surveying or program planning
how to assign tasks
according to team members strengths
what to do if discover the recruited team members lack necessary skills
solicit help from individuals outside the team
