natral selection and evolution Flashcards
natural selection
process where organisms shows variation and better adapts to their environment. this increases survival causing the organisms to produce more offspring and pass on the genes
evolution
gradual change of species overtime
started with bacteria
evolution vs natural selection
evolution occurs over a long period of time
natural selection is an event which causes the survival of the fittest
what are fossils
fossils are formed when animal and plant remains or traces are preserved in rocks.
fossil layers forming a sequence showing that organisms have gradually changed over time
fossil record
how does a fossil form
organism dies
flesh rots leaving skeleton covered in sand soil or clay
skeleton becomes mineralised which turns it into rock
the rocks shift in the earth with the fossil trapped inside
erosion takes place when fossil emerges
how fossil record provides eveidence for evolution
fossil of simple organisms are found in the oldest rocks
more complex organisms are found in recent rocks
this supports the theory that simple life forms gradually evolved into more complex ones
plant fossils appear before animals reinforcing that animals require plants to survive
molecular comparison
closely related species have similar dna. they look at the order of nucleic acid bases or amino acids in protein
artificial classification
grouping organisms based on observable charcteristics
