genetic engineering Flashcards
1
Q
what is genetic engineering
A
altering an organisms genotype to produce an organism with desired characteristics
accurate process
single genes targeted
fast process
occurs in a generation
2
Q
benefits of using genetic engineering in agriculture
A
- increase the crop yield from the same area of land
- to produce toxins that kills insects which makes plant resistant to pests which reduces amount of pesticides needed
- produce medial drugs such as insulin or drugs to treat diseases in domesticated animals
3
Q
risks of genetic engineering
A
- eating genetically engineered organisms may lead to health problems
- gm crops can cross pollinate with wild crops which could disrupt ecosystem balance
- maybe be unethical
4
Q
how do scientists produce a genetically engineered organisms
A
scientists take genes from another organisms that codes for this characteristic
these a foreign genes that scientists put in plant or animal cells at an early stage of the organisms development.
as organisms develops, it displays the characteristics coded by the foreign genes
