4.1.8 decomposers Flashcards
what is decomposition
decomposes breaking down or decaying dead organic material at a microscopic level
what is a detritivore?
small animals that catalyse decomposition by shredding organic material into very small pieces so the decomposers have a large SA to work on
examples of decomposers
fungi
bacteria
examples of detrivores
earthworms
woodlice
maggot
how decomposers release nutrients
decomposers release enzymes on dead organism
enzymes digest dead matter and make it soluble
soluble products are absorbed by decomposers
factors affecting rate of decomposition
warm temp- too high temp can cause enzymes to denature. too low temp slows rate of reaction
moist environment- low water levels can slow down reaction and stop decomposition process
aerobic conditions - oxygen needed for organisms to respire.
