controlling blood sugar Flashcards
why is it important to control blood sugar levels
glucose allows the body perform bodily fuctions
glucose released after eaten causes sugar level to rise that can damage nerves and blood vessels
low glucose levels can prevent cells from respiring effectively
what is insulin
blood sugar levels are too high then:
pancreas releases insulin
travels to liver
stimulates liver to turn glucose into glycogen
glycogen stored in liver and blood sugar level lowers
what is glucagon
hormone released by blood glucose concentration is too low
released by pancreas
glucagon makes liver turn glycogen back to glucose which increase sugar levels
type 1 diabetes
cannot produce insulin
condition begins in childhood
controlled by regular injections of insulin
eat a balanced diet and exercise
type 2 diabetes
cannot effectively use insulin
occurs later in life
obesity
regulating carbohydrate intake through their diet and exercising
encouraged to lose weight
