Mechanism of Action
Competitive inhibition at narcotic receptor sites, reverses respiratory depression secondary to depressant drugs, completely inhibits the effect of morphine.

Indications
Opiate overdose, coma; complete or partial reversal of CNS and respiratory depression induced by opioids, decreased level of consciousness, coma of unknown origin, narcotic agonist for the following, morphine, heroin, hydromorphone (Dilaudid), methadone, Demerol, fentanyl, codeine, Stadol, Talwin, and Nubain.

Contraindications
Use with caution in narcotic dependent patients and in neonates of narcotic-addicted mothers.

Adverse Reactions
Withdrawal symptoms in the addicted patient, tachycardia, hypertension, arrhythmias, nausea, vomiting, and diaphoresis.

Drug Interactions
Incompatible with bisulfate and alkaline solutions.

Adult Dosage
0.4 – 2 mg SIVP, IM, SC, or ET; minimum recommended dose is 2 mg; repeat at 5-minute intervals to a maximum dose of 10 mg.

Pediatric Dosage
0.1 mg/kg/dose SIVP, IM, SC, and ET to a maximum dose of 0.8 mg; if no response administer an additional 0.1 mg/kg/dose.

Special Considerations
May not reverse hypotension. Use with caution when administering to narcotic addicted patients (potential for violent behavior).
