What are the 4 different causes for osteoporosis ?
Imbalance between bone resorption and bone production

How is osteoporosis treated?
Alendronic acid - prevents osteoclasts activity
Define arthropathy
Joint disease or disorder
What are the features of osteoarthritis?
Morning stiffness
Pain, worse with movement
Reduced range of movement
Define osteophyte
Outgrowths of thickening bone
Who does rheumatoid arthritis affect?
1% of population. Women affected 3x more than men.
What causes gout?
Drugs (aspirin, diuretics), alcohol, renal disease, hypothyroidism, dehydration
How does gout present?
Sudden onset excruciating joint pain
Redness, warmth, tenderness
Usually first affects big toe
What I’d pseudo gout?
Calcium pyrophosphate crystals in connective tissues
What causes pseudo gout?
Hereditary
Associated with osteoarthritis
Trauma or surgery
How does septic arthritis present?
Severe pain, swelling, redness and heat in joint. May be unable to move joint
How is septic arthritis treated?
IV antibiotics, may require washout of joint
What is osteomyelitis?
Bone infection caused by bacteria
What causes osteomyelitis?
Trauma , surgery, prescience of foreign bodies
What is the most common bone tumour?
Metastatic disease from distant cancer (prostate, kidney, breast)
