Inflammation Flashcards
What is erythema induced by?
Histamine and nitric acid
What is the main aim of inflammation?
To recruit leucocytes to damaged area
Define margination
The phenomenon of RBCs flowing in the centre of the lumen and WBCs flowing peripherally
What is meant by rolling?
An increased number of leucocytes rolling along the edge of the damaged endothelium
Define adhesion
When leucocytes stop and adhere to endothelium
What do cytokines do in damaged tissue
Encourage adhesion of WBCs
Define transmigration
When a WBC passes through endothelium to extra vascular space
Define chemotaxis
Exogenous and endogenous substances attract WBCs to injury site
Which WBC appears within 6-24 hrs at injury site
Neutrophils
Which WBC appears within 24-48 hrs at injury site
Monocytes
What is fibrosis
Healing with connective tissue replacement
Name 3 causes of chronic inflammation
- Persistent infection
- Immune mediated inflammation
- Prolonged exposure to toxic agent
What is a granuloma
Cellular attempt to contain offending agent
Normal tissues can be injured by high number of macrophages and t lymphocytes
What are the 5 clinical signs of inflammation?
Redness, swelling, heat, pain, loss of function
Name some symptoms of inflammation
Fever, tachycardia, hypotension, raised wcc, raised crp
