Musculoskeletal Flashcards
What nerve passes through the carpal tunnel?
Median nerve
What bones make up the carpal tunnel?
scaffoid lunate triquetrum pisiform hamate capitate trapezoid trapezium
What bone in the hand/wrist is most commonly fractured in a fall of an outstretched wrist?
the scaffoid bone
`what bone can be palpated in the anatomical snuff box?
scaffoid bone
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
entrapment of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel.
nerve compression –> paresthesia, pain, and numbness in the distribution of the median nerve
What is Guyon canal syndrome? in whom is it classically seen?
Compression of the ulnar nerve at the wrist or hand.
Classically seen in cyclists due to compression from handlebars
What nerve roots make up the median nerve?
C5-T1
What is the motor innervation of the median nerve?
thenar muscles
forearm flexors
radial (lateral) lumbricals
What is the sensory innervation of the median nerve?
Radial 2/3 of the palm
volar surfaces of thumb, 2nd, and 3rd digits, and radial half of 4th
What is the muscle and sensory innervation of the musculocutaneous nerve?
Innervates the arm flexors and provides sensory information to the anterolateral forearm
What is the motor innervation of the ulnar nerve?
hypothenar muscles adductor pollicis interosseus muscles ulnar (medial) lumbricals (4 and 5) ulnar flexors
What is the sensory innervation of the ulnar nerve?
ulnar half of the wrist and palm, 4th and 5th digits
What is the motor innervation of the radial nerve?
innervates the extensors of the arm and forearm
What is the sensory innervation of the radial nerve?
skin of the posterior arm and forearm
radial half of the dorsum of the hand (not including the fingertips)
