Biochem Flashcards
Which cells produce collagen?
fibroblasts
How much DNA would cells in G0 or G1 phase have?
They would have a diploid amount of DNA (2N)
How much DNA would cells in S-phase have?
Intermediate amounts of DNA between 2N and 4N
How much DNA would cells in G2 phase have?
They would have a tetraploid amount of DNA (4N)
What would be the ploidy of tumor cells?
half 2N, half 4N
What are the clinical manifestations of vitamin C deficiency?
vitamin C deficiency may present with bruising. This deficiency leads to easy bruising because of increased fragility of small blood vessels due to poor collagen formation around the small blood vessels.
What are Advance Glycosylation End (AGE) products?
these are insoluble proteins (mostly collagen and other long-lived proteins) that progressively accumulate in blood vessel walls due to glycosylation. This is a mechanism underlying damage in diabetes mellitus and aging.
On what chromosome is the gene for Huntington disease on?
Chromosome 4
“Hunting 4 food”
What type of genetic disorder is Huntington disease?
A trinucleotide repeat disorder (CAG)n.
An increase in the number of repeats –> decrease in the age of onset. This is known as anticipation (earlier onset of disease in subsequent generations)
Administration of what vitamin can prevent neural tube defects?
Folate
