Miscellaneous Flashcards
.
Children with DiGeorge Syndrome are especially at risk for viral and fungal infections, due to lack of T cell development secondary to the failure of development of the thymus
.
Prednisone is often used to treat patients with sarcoid who have hypercalcemia. The glucocorticoids suppress 1-alpha hydroxylase activity, which will –> decreased vitamin D activation –> decreased Ca absorption
What is the physiologic cause of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)?
Ultimately due to an excess of DHT (dihydrotestosterone)
What is the activated form of prednisone?
Prednisolone
Prednisone must be reduced to its active form for its anti-inflammatory effects to occur. The enzyme that catalyzes this reaction is 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase.
