Muscular System: Abnormalities Flashcards
Dyskinesia
Distortion or impairment of voluntary movement, as in a tic, spasm, or myoclonus
Hypertonia
A condition of excessive tone of skeletal muscles with increased resistance of muscle to passive stretching
Paraplegia
The paralysis of both legs and the lower part of the body
Ataxia
The inability to coordinate the muscles in the execution of voluntary movement
Fascioplasty
The surgical repair of the fascia
Atrophy
Weakness and wasting away caused by disuse of the muscle over a long period of time
Fasciorrhapy
The suturing of lacerated fascia
Bradykinesia
Extreme slowness in movement
Hemiplegia
Total paralysis of one side of the body
Contracture
Abnormal shortening of muscle tissues making the muscle resistant to stretching
Hyperkinesia
Abnormally increased motor function or activity
Dystaxia
Difficulty in controlling voluntary movement
Hypokinesia
Abnormally decreased motor function or activity
Fasciectomy
The surgical removal of a fascia
Hypotonia
A condition of diminished tone of the skeletal muscles with decreased resistance of muscle to passive stretching
Myalgia
Muscle tenderness or pain
Myosclerosis
Abnormal hardening of muscle tissue
Myocele
The protrusion of a muscle through its ruptured sheath or fascia
Myotonia
The delayed relaxation of a muscle after a strong contraction
Myomalacia
Abnormal softening of muscle tissue
Quadriplegia
The paralysis of all four extremities
Myonecrosis
The death of individual muscle fibers
Singultus
Also known as hiccups
Myorrhapy
To suture a muscle wound
