Muscular system Flashcards
what is a muscle tissue
tissue that contracts and relaxes to produce movement of the body
types of muscular tissue and sstate which are striated and non-striated
skeletal muscle tissue (striated)
cardiac muscle tissue (striated)
smooth muscle tissue (non-striated)
Description of skleletal muscle
tubular shape, has striations, multinucleated and are under voluntary control by the brain
function of skeletal muscle
- produce movemnt of the skeleton
- maintain posture and body posistion
- support soft tissues and protects internal organs
- guard entrances and exits to digestive, respiratory and urinary tracts (sphincters)
- maintain body temperature
description of cardiac muscles
tubular shape with branches, has striation, uninucleated and controlled involuntarily
function of cardiac muscles
circulate blood, maintain blood pressure
smooth muscles location
found in walls of blood vessels and in digestive, respiratory and urinary and reproductive organs
description of smooth muscles
spindle shaped, non-striated, uninucleate fibres that are not under voluntary control of the brain
function of smooth muscles
- move food, urine and reproductive tract secretions
- control diamterer of respiratory passageways
- regulate diameter of blood vessels
description of origin
begining of muscle attachment which remains staionary
description insertion
ending of muscle attachment that moves
what is an action
contraction of msucle to produce specific action
two division of skeletal muscles
axial and appendicular muscles
Function of the axial muscles
- move rib cage
- assiting in movements that contributes to breathing
function of appendicular muscles
- stabilize or move components of the appendicular skeleton
- support pectoral (shoulder) and pelvic (hip) girdles
- support limbs
