Masseter, temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoids
What is the action of the masseter?
Elevates the mandible, closing the mouth
What innervates the masseter?
Mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve
What is the action of the temporalis?
Elevates the mandible, closing the mouth and retracts the mandible
What innervates the temporalis?
Mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve
What is the action of the medial pterygoid?
Elevates the mandible, closing the mouth
What is the action of the lateral pterygoid?
Protraction of the mandible to push the jaw forwards
What innervates the pterygoids?
Mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve
Where are the muscles of facial expression located?
In the subcutaneous tissue
What three broad groups can the muscles of facial expression be split into?
Orbital, nasal and oral
What are the muscles of facial expression?
Orbicularis oculi, corrugator supercilii
Nasalis, procerus, depressor septi nasi
Orbicularis oris, buccinator and other oral muscles
