Blood Vessels Flashcards
Which muscle does the external jugular vein course over?
SCM
What arteries arise from the subclavian artery in the base of the neck?
Vertebral, internal thoracic and thyrocervical
On the right, what arises from the brachiocephalic trunk?
Subclavian and common carotid arteries
What does the suprascapular artery supply?
Posterior aspect of shoulder
What does the inferior thyroid artery supply?
Lower pole of thyroid gland
Where do vertebral arteries arise?
From the subclavian arteries on the left and right
What does the internal carotid artery enter the skull through?
Carotid canal in petrous part of the temporal bone
At what level does the common carotid artery bifurcate?
C4 - level of superior border of the thyroid cartilage
Where is a common site for atheroma formation in the neck?
At the bifurcation of the carotid artery
What does the carotid sinus do?
Contains barorecptors for detecting changes in arterial BP
What does the carotid body contain?
Peripheral chemoreceptors which detect arterial oxygen
What’s the importance of a carotid sinus massage?
It’s possible to terminate a supraventricular tachycardia
What is the route of the internal carotid artery?
Enters skull through petrous part of the temporal bone, turns medially and horizontally, enters the cranial cavity then makes S shaped bend and courses through the cavernous sinus
What are the branches of the external carotid artery?
Superior tyroid Lingual Facial Ascending pharyngeal Occipital Posterior auricular Superficial temporal Maxillary
Why can deep lacerations of the scalp involving epicranial aponeurosis cause profuse bleeding?
Because of the opposin pull of occiptofrontalis
