Lymphatics Flashcards
Where does lymph enter the venous circulation?
Right lymphatic duct -> right subclavian vein
Thoracic duct -> left subclavian vein
What is lymphoedema?
Abnormal collection of protein rich fluid causing tissue swelling due to compromised lymphatic system
What can cause lymphoedema?
- Removal/enlargement of lymph nodes
- Infections
- Damage to lymphatic system eg cancer treatments
- Lack of limb movement (muscle contraction helps move lymph)
- Congenital
What separates the superficial (regional) and deep (terminal) lymph nodes in the neck?
Investing layer of deep cervical fascia of neck
What are some superficial cervical lymph nodes?
Submental Submandibular Preauricular Postauricular Occipital
What does Waldeyer’s ring consist of?
1 pharyngeal tonsil
2 tubal tonsils
2 palatine tonsils
1 lingual tonsil
What are the anatomical relations of the deep cervical lymph nodes?
Deep to SCM
Closely related to IJV and carotid sheath
What are some deep cervical lymph nodes
Jugulo-digastric
Jugulo-omohyoid
Supracalvicular lymph nodes - within supraclavicular fossa
What is Virchow’s node?
Left supraclavicular lymph node - takes lymph from abdomen
What does a right supraclavicular node take its supply from?
Mid section chest, oesophagus and lungs
An ulcer on the lower lip could cause enlargement of what lymph nodes?
Submental lymph nodes
Conjunctivitis could cause enlargement of which lymph nodes?
Preauricular lymph nodes
Tonsillitis could cause enlargement of which lymph nodes?
Jugular digastric lymph nodes
Oral thrush could cause enlargment of which lymph nodes?
Submandibular lymph nodes
