Muscles of Gluteal Region Flashcards
gluteus medius
O: ext surface of ilium b/w ant and post gluteal lines
I: lateral surface of greater trochanter
N: superior gluteal L4, L5, S1
A: abducts and medially rotates thigh;
keeps pelvis level when opposite leg is raised
gluteus maximus
O: ilium post to post gluteal line; dorsal surface of sacrum and
coccyx; sacrotuberous ligament
I: most fibers end in IT band which enter into lateral condyle of
tibia; some fibers insert of gluteal tuberosity of femur
N: inf gluteal L5, S1, S2
A: extends and assists in lateral rotation of thigh,
gluteus minimus
O: ext surface of ilium b/w ant and inf gluteal lines
I: ant surface of greater trochanter
N: superior gluteal L4, L5, S1
A: abducts and medially rotates thigh;

tensor fascia lata
O: ASIS, ant part of iliac crest
I: IT band which attaches to lateral condyle of tibia
N: superior gluteal L4, L5, S1
A: flexes thigh
piriformis
O: ant surface of 2-4 sacral segments, sup margin of greater
sciatic notch, sacrotuberous ligament
I: sup border of greater trochanter
N: ant rami S1, S2
A: laterally rotates extended thigh, abduct flexed thigh,
stabilize hip joint
obturator internus
O: pelvic surface of ilium and ischium, obturator membrane
I: medial surface of greater trochanter
N: nerve to obturator internus L5, S1
A: laterally rotate extended thigh, abduct flexed thigh,
stabilize hip joint
superior gemelli
O: ischial spine I: medial surface of greater trochanter N: nerve to obturator internus L5, S1 A: laterally rotates extended thigh, abducts flexed thigh, stabilizes hip joint
inferior gemilli
O: ischial tuberosity I: medial surface of greater trochanter N: nerve to quadratus femoris L5, S1 A: laterally rotates extended thigh, abducts flexed thigh, stabilizes hip joint
