Muscles And Muscle Action. Flashcards
Isometric contraction
Muscle stays the same length and nothing moves e.g. Wall sit (used less frequently)
Isotonic contractions
Muscles change length and so something moves e.g. Bicep curl.
Fast twitch fibres
Used in explosive activities Contract quickly Produce powerful action Limited oxygen supply White in colour E.g. Speed event and throwing.
Slow twitch fibres
Used in endurance activities Contract slowly Long lasting Good oxygen supply Red in colour E.g. Long distance running and swimming
Immediate effect of excercise on muscles
Requirement for extra fuel (glucose and oxygen)
Lactic acid produced if not enough oxygen
Muscle stiffness, soreness and cramp
Muscles start to fatigue, can no longer perform movement.
Effects of regular training on muscles
Can cope better with lactic acid, takes longer to build up. Increased hyper trophy Increase strength Increase power Increase muscle endurance More toned muscle appearance Better posture Reduce risk of injury
Potential for injuries
Sprains
Strains
Muscle atrophy
Minor injuries e.g. Cuts and grazes
Treatment for muscular injury
Rest- rest the injured part to reduce further injury.
Ice- apply ice or cold compress to reduce blood flow, pain and swelling.
Compression- compress the injury to reduce bleeding and swelling.
Elevation- elevate the injured part to reduce, bleeding, swelling and throbbing.
