Muscle quiz Flashcards
Main functions of muscles?
Produce movement of the body or within the body.
Maintain posture or facial contours.
Cause heat production to maintain body temperature.
Assist with venous return.
How are muscles attached to the bones?
by tendons
Difference between origin and insertion.
Origin is part where muscle is attached to the bone. Insertion is attached to the moveable part, tissue or fascia.
What does it mean when muscles are referred to as working antagonistically?
One muscle contracts to move the bone one way the other contracts the bone back. eg biceps and triceps
What is muscle tone, why is it necessary?
Partial contraction. needed to keep body upright.
What job do flexors do?
They are muscles that bend a limb.
Factors that affect muscle tone.
Exercise levels, genes, diet eg protein intake, lifestyle and age. temperature, electrical currents, infra red rays and massage. If the nerve supply to the muscle was damaged the muscle tone would deteriorate.
Characteristics of muscle tissue.
Can shorten or contract.
Spring back to its original form after contraction - like elastic. Stretch when relaxed. respond to stimuli provided by nerve impulses.
What protein filaments is muscle tissue made from?
Actin and myosin
What does a muscle need in order for it to contract
needs stimulus from the motor nerve attached to the muscle fibre and a sufficient energy supply. The energy form ATP rich in glucose and oxygen.
How does the muscle contract?
Actin filaments slide further in between the myosin filaments, therefore shortening the muscle fibres.
How do you recognise muscle fatigue?
A muscle that fails to relax completely resulting in the muscle going into spasm, can be painful
What is muscle strain what are the symptoms?
Stretching or tearing of the muscle fibres. symptoms include pain, tightness, swelling, tenderness and inability to move muscle well.
