Lymphatic system Flashcards

1
Q

Functions of the lymphatic system

A

Filters bacteria, foreign materials, toxins and harmful materials.
Drains away excess fluid to prevent water clogging of the tissue and cells.
Transports proteins back into the blood supply.
Produces lymphocytes which protect and defend the body against infection.
Produces antibodies to fight infection
Absorbs fat from the intestine and transport it to the liver.

Q

Structure and Function of lymph capillaries

A

Fine hollow elastic tubes similar to blood capillaries in structure but wider. Walls more permeable than blood capillaries. Transport lymph fluid away from cells and tissues

Q

Structure and Function of lymph vessels

A

Run closely alongside veins. Have collapsible walls cary lymph at a steady pressure similar to veins in structure contain valves called semi lunar valves. Transport the lymphatic fluid through one or more of the lymph nodes.

A

Tiny clusters of glands. filter out bacteria and toxins. white blood cells produce antibodies and ingest bacteria and foreign bodies.

18
Q

Location and function of axillary nodes

A

In the underarms, drains the pectoral area and upper arm

19

Q

Location and function of popliteal nodes

A

behind the knees, drains toes, feet an lower legs

24
Q

Location and function of Cisterna chyli

A

Sack like chamber in the abdomen, receives lymph from the lower abdomen, lower limbs, pelves and coveys it into the thoracic duct.

25
Q

Which vessel does lymph enter a node and which vessel does it exit by?

A

Enters through afferent, exits through efferent

26
Q

Function and location of spleen

A

Behind the stomach produces antibodies and lymphocytes destroy old red blood cells.

27
Q

Where does the primary interaction between blood and lymph supply occur?

A

Capillary exchange.

28
Q

How does lymph return to the blood supply?

A

Via the lymphatic ducts and into the subclavian veins

29
Q

How is fat transported from the digestive tract to the blood

A

through lymph

30
Q

How do lymphocytes circulate around the body?

A

In lymph and blood vessels
