Muscle Fibers Flashcards
Slow Twitch Muscle
Type I
Intermediate fibers
Type IIa fibers
Fast Twitch Fibers
Type IIb
Anaerobic, maximum tension rapidly, easily fatigued, low number of capillaries, few mitochondria, low myoglobin, Hydrolyzes ATP quickly, for explosive power
Type IIb Fast Twitch Muscle Fibers
Mostly aerobic, maximum tension more quickly than type 1, medium fatigue resistance, high # capilaries, many mitochondria, glycogen reserve, medium myoglobin, Hydrolyzes ATP at a medum rate, good for biking
Type IIa intermediate fibers
High energy compound, created when a muscle is resting for fast twitch muscles, quick ATP, doesn’t need O2
creatine phosphate
Provides a lot of ATP from breakdown of glucose, slow and intermediate twitch, requires O2, lots of ATP
cellular respiration
Breaks down glucose, small amounts of ATP that does not use O2, fast twitch, Provides quick ATP. Not as much created per molecule. Produces lactic acid
Fermentation
