Muscle Disease Flashcards
What are five neuronal diseases?
Poliomyelitis Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Multiple sclerosis Spinal cord injury Myastenia Gravis
What is poliomyelitis?
A transmitted viral disease
Inflammation of the anterior horn of the spinal cord
What are the symptoms of poliomyelitis?
Flaccid palsy
What is post polio-syndrome?
40 years after poliomyelitis
Weakness, fatigue, pain
Loss of motor units
Motor units that still exist are overstrained
Moderate exercise can increase aerobic and anaerobic fitness
Vigorous exercise is prohibited
What is the incidence of ALS?
1 : 100,000
What is ALS?
Rapid and progressive loss of motor neurons
Early symptoms include muscle atrophy and weakness
Late symptoms include paralysis
Premature death
What may lead to early detection of ALS?
Testing of cerebrospinal fluid?
What do studies show in relation to exercise and ALS?
Deterioration by vigorous exercise, but animal studies suggest this may not be true
Aerobic exercise may strengthen unaffected muscles and improve cardiovascular health
What is MS?
Random patches of inflammation in CNS
Demyelination
What is the prevalence of MS in caucasians?
~ 1/1000
How much higher is the risk for women than men in MS?
2 times
10 years after diagnosis with MS how many patients are unemployable?
50%
What are the symptoms of MS?
Paraesthesia Optic neuritis Spasticity Tremor Pain Uncommon fatigue Thermoregularion Weakness Clumsiness Incontinence
What is the treatment for MS?
Drug treatment
Physiotherapy to relieve secondary problems
What are four types of hereditary muscular dystrophy?
Duchenne
Becker
Myotonic dystrophy
Mitochondrial myopathies
