Rise of Islam in India
The Gupta empire fell causing India to break into smaller kingdoms. Muslim traders show up and invade northern india. This brought over Islam.
Timurid Invasion
Timur invaded the Delhi sultanate. He also fought with elephants.
Capture of Delhi
Timur captured Delhi which caused citizens to revolt. Timur made all citizens bring him 2 heads but they didn’t have enough so everyone left. Then Timur left.
Delhi Sultanate
They were very tolerant of other religions and wanted to spread the word of Islam.
Weakening of Delhi Sultanate
With them weakening left the empire open to invasion.
Babur
Was called “the tiger”. He attempted to conquer Asia but failed and instead conquered the Delhi sultanate. He founded the Mughal (mongol) empire.
Akbar the Great
He was Babur’s grandson and was only 13 when he took over. He preached religious tolerance and lowered taxes. He died in 1605 and his son succeeded him.
Jahangir
He tried to overthrow his father. He adopted Persian culture and his wife ruled when he was sick.
Sikhism
A mix of islam and Hinduism. They believe in one god and reincarnation. They wear turbans, never cut their hair and always carry a knife
Shah Jahan
Jahangir’s son. He built the Taj Mahal and moved the capital to Delhi. He hated other religions and raised taxes.
Aurangzeb
Shah Jahan Got sick and Aurangzeb took over. Aurangzeb killed all his rivals and declared himself emperor. He destroyed temples and made his elephants crust protesters.
Decline of the Mughal Empire
Because of Aurangzeb being so harsh, people revolted. This caused invasions, destruction and a civil war. Eventually England took control of india.
