Daily life in feudal japan
Most people worked in agriculture and the main crop was rice. Everything was also about ritual and precision.
Shintoism
The indigenous peoples’ religion before the Japanese came over. They worshiped nature spirits called kami. The red gateways are entrances to kami temples.
Buddhism
After the Japanese people came over to Japan they introduced buddhism. It originally from China but then it spread worldwide.
Zen Buddhism
It is about peace and finding a center in nature. This didn’t really align with Japan’s beliefs so they changed it to fit their culture.
Confucianism
It’s not very religious and is more like a philosophy. It set up this system to help keep balance in society. This was the norm for japan.

Education in Feudal Japan
Samurai were taught martial arts, literature, and ethics. Temple schools taught education for commoners. Terakoya taught only to rich people (they got the best education). And women got limited education.
Warfare and castles
Famous castles: Himeji, Osaka, and Edo
Siege warfare and the importance of alliances, Siege is when you surround the castle and don’t let anyone in or out and wait.
Women of Feudal Japan
Roles varied by social class
Samurai women: educated in martial arts and household management
Peasant women: worked alongside men in fields
Limited legal rights, but some women held significant influence
Tokogawa shogunate
Used guns and was the first shogunate. He moved the capital to Edo (modern day Tokyo)
Hongwu (Ming)
Took power in 1368 and named the dynasty ming. He got rid of the Mongols and was an overall good leader. He also created civil service exams.
Yonglo (Ming)
Took control after Hongwu and moved the capital to Beijing and built the forbidden city.
Forbidden City
Where the imperial court was stationed.
Zheng He (MIng)
Was first a slave but then became a part of the court. He explored the Indian ocean and established trade networks.
Isolationism
In 1433 the Ming emperor stopped all trade and exploration in an attempt to preserve Japanese culture. This created a new Mongol threat and restored the great wall.
