What prompted Exploration?
People wanted more stuff efficiently, which meant they needed better trade routes. They also wanted gold,god and glory.

Portuguese Exploration
Prince Henry the navigator made a school to teach how to sail so they would have more men to explore. Bartolomeo Dias tried to travel to the tip of Africa but chickened out, but Vasco de Gama successfully did it and made a new trade network in africa.
Spanish Exploration
Christopher columus tried to go to Asia but went the wrong way and found america. He killed thousands of natives and Spain got in trouble for this. But they went looking for gold (think of pocahontas).
Western Civilization
Based on religion and philosophy. It prompted slavery. Not very nice.
Amerigo Vespucci
He sailed for Spain and ended up in America. He discovered that north and south america are separate land masses. He was the 1st European to see the pacific ocean.
Ferdinand Magellan
He traveled around the world (his men did, not him). He sailed for Spain but got lost and ended up in america. He died in the Philippines while sailing, he was fighting natives. He proved that the world is round.
English Explorers
Sir Francis Drake sailed after Magellan and mapped the coast of north and south america. Britain wanted in on the gold so they tried to find the northwest passage (that does not and will never exist).
French Explorers
Jacque Catier found the st Lawrence river and them and the natives fought over it and the french indian war started. That’s why Cagan people can speak french.
Dutch Exploration
Henry Hudson (English man) wanted to find a new way around and he wanted the Dutch to sponsor him. While he was at the Hudson bay his crew got mad at him and left him at sea (he was never found).
