Encomienda
Men would be guaranteed land grants and the men would grow crops and make native americans work on their land. If the native americans worked for them then they wouldn’t have to convert to christianity. It was slavery.
Hernan Cortez
He conquered the Aztecs, he won because he had guns. The Aztecs only had spears and bows. He also ganged up on them with other tribes because they didn’t like how powerful the Aztecs were.

A word for Spanish conqueror
Moctezuma II
The leader of the Aztecs. He was taken hostage by Hernan Cortez and was executed.
Franciso Piazrro
He was looking for Spain but ended up in South america. He fought the incas. He invited them to talk away from the mountains and they said sure and they kidnapped him and killed him.

Was granted encomienda by the Spanish government, but when he saw the natives he rejected it. Was one of the first people to speak out about encomienda.
Treaty of Tordesillas
When 2 countries are sharing a territory they are bound to argue, so this treaty was made to stop this.
Viceroys
Regional governors that are incharge of the amount of gold ships carry over.
French in the Americas
They had a positive relationship with the natives and didn’t want to take territory or trade routes. They were very peaceful.
La Sall
A French explorer who found NOLA and brought the French over.
The Dutch and New Netherlands
This was before the dutch were kicked out of the USA and they brought dutch culture to NYC.
Jamestown
1187 founded in virginia. One of the first lasting English colonies. (Think pocahontas).
Roanoke

A group of puritans who traveled to America to purify the church of england. They were very powerful in England and the USA and founded the colonies in Massachusetts.
