Huguenot
In 1550 one in every 10 french people was a huguenot. They were catholic and the monarchy did not like them. They believed in one king, one law, one faith.
St Bartholomew’s day massacre
The queen ordered for all the huguenots to be executed. This all started at Henry Navarres’s wedding. The violence spread through Paris and then all over france. Over 60,000 were killed.
Henry IV
He was a huguenot and escaped assaination. He became king and became catholic to do so. She said “Paris is worth the mass”. He got rid of debt, simulated trade, built canals, and simulated agriculture. He was assassinated in 1610.
Edict of Nantes
Henry IV issued it in 1598. It gave Huguenots partial rights. They could worship as wanted but all their tax money went to the catholic church.
Louis XIII
He was too young so his mom and his regent. The three musketeers are based off of him. He besieged La Rochelle’s city for 14 months, then he forced them to be catholic.
Cardinal Richelieu
He planted spies among the nobility and undercovered plots against the crown. He wanted to bring down the catholic shasburg in the 30 years war. He died in 1623.
Louis XIV
He called himself the Sun King. He spent all of France’s money and moved to versailles.
