MSK - Muscles of the Forearm Flashcards
What is the muscle in the second layer of the anterior forearm?
Flexor digitorum superficialisis
What are the 4 superficial anterior forearm muscles?
From lateral to medial
Pronator Teres
Flexor carpi radialis
Palmaris longus
Flexor carpi ulnaris
What are the 3 deep muscles in the anterior forearm?
Flexor pollicus longus
Flexor digitorum profundus
Pronator quadratus
What nerves supply the anterior forearm compartment
The median nerve - all except FCU and FDP
The ulnar nerve - FCU and FDP
The interosseous nerve (branch from the median) supplies the deepest layer muscles
What are the 6 superficial muscles on the posterior forearm?
From medial to lateral
Brachioradialis Extensor carpi radialis longus Extensor carpi radialis brevis Extensor digitorum Extensor digit minimi Extensor carpi ulnaris
What are the 5 deep muscles of the posterior forearm?
Lateral to medial Supinator Abductor pollicis longus Extensor pollicis longus Extensor pollicis brevis Extensor indicis
What nerve supplies muscles in the posterior forearm?
The radial nerve
Usually the deep branch
What is the action of the pronator Teres?
Pronation of forearm
Flexion of elbow
What is the action of the superficial anterior muscles?
Flexion of the wrist
What is the action of the flexor digitorum superficialis?
Flexes the middle phalanges
What is the action of the flexor digitorum profundus?
This flexes the distal phalanges
What is the action of the flexor pollicis longus?
Flexes the thumb
What do the extensor radialis and extensor ulnaris do?
Extend the wrist
What is the action of the extensor digitorum?
Extends the medial digits
What is the action of the extensor digit minimi?
Extends the little finger
What digit do the pollicis muscles control?
Thumb (1st digit)
Which arteries supply the forearm?
Radial and ulnar arteries
Describe the arterial course from the top of the arm
Axillary artery - brachial artery - radial and ulnar
Radial runs laterally towards the distal forearm
The ulnar runs lateral to the FCU tendon runs deep into most anterior muscles - finishes in medial side of wrist
Describe the nervous supply to the forearm
The median nerve runs between the FDS FDP
The ulnar nerve passes posterior to the medial epicondyle descends between the FCU and FDP
The radial nerve runs posteriorly splits into superficial and deep
Deep winds round radius neck and supplies posterior compartment.
