MSK - Elbow Joint Flashcards
What are the 3 main ligaments of the elbow joint?
Radial collateral - fan like lateral epicondyle to annular ligament
Ulnar collateral - between medial epicondyle and coronoid process and olecranon of the ulna (3 bands)
Annular ligament - surrounds the lower part of the head of the radius and radial notch
What are the 3 articulating surfaces of the elbow joint?
The humero-ulnar = Trochlea and Trochlea notch of ulna
The humero-radial = capitulum and the radial head
The proximal radio-ulnar = radial head and radial notch
What is under the ligaments in the elbow joint?
A second capsule made of Synovial membrane with fat pads.
What are the two problematic bursas in the elbow?
The subcutaneous olecranon
And the subtendinous olecranon
What are the two nerves that interact with the epicondyles?
The radial nerve passes anterior to the lateral epicondyle whilst the ulnar nerve passes posterior to the medial epicondyle.
What are the two radioulnar joints?
The proximal and the distal
What are the articulating surfaces of the proximal radioulnar joint?
The head of the radius rotates on the radial notch on the ulna
What is the movement initiated by the action of the radio ulnar joints?
Supination and pronation
What are the articulating surfaces of the distal radioulnar joint?
The rounded head of the ulnar pivots on the ulnar notch on the radius
What is the interosseous membrane?
A fibrous joint that allows distribution of force from the radius to the ulna
What are the articulating surfaces of the wrist joint?
The distal radius and proximal carpal bones (scaphoid, lunate, triquetrium)
What are the 3 ligaments of the wrist joint?
Collateral (radial and ulnar)
Palmar radio carpal
Dorsal radio carpal
What are the movements of the wrist?
Flexion and extension
Abduction
Adduction
What is pulled elbow?
When the head of the radius subluxates from the annular ligament
What is the most common wrist fracture?
Colles - falling onto an extended wrist
Posterior displacement of the distal radius
