MSK - Bones and Joints Flashcards
What are the three classifications of joint type?
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
What is a joint?
An articulating surface between two or more bones
Describe and name a type of fibrous joint
Fibrous joints are fixed, immovable made of fibrous CT
E.g coronal structure in the skull
Name and describe cartilaginous joints
Synchondrosis - primary - hyaline cartilage e.g growth plates
Symphysis - secondary - fibrocartilage e.g intervertebral discs
Describe a synovial joint
Most common and most movable joint
Ends of bones contain thick slippery liquid called synovial fluid
The articular capsule is continuous with periosteum of bones
Articular cartilage at articulating surfaces.
Name the 6 types of synovial joint
Plane Hinge Saddle Ball and socket Condyloid Pivot
Describe a plane synovial joint
Permits gliding or sliding movements
E.g acromioclavicular
Describe a hinge joint
Permits flexion and extension only e.g elbow
Describe a saddle joint
Concave and convex joint surface e.g carpal and metacarpal
Describe a condyloid joint
Flexion, extension, adduction, abduction and cicumdantion
E.g metacarpal phalangeal junction (knuckles)
Describe the pivot joint
Allows rotation, round bony process fits in bony ligamentous socket
E,g proximal radio ulnar joint
