MSK - Gluteal Region Flashcards
What does the gluteus maximus do?
Extends thigh and assists in lateral rotation
What is the group function of the gluteal region?
To abduct, extend and laterally rotate the femur
What innervates the gluteus maximus?
The inferior gluteal nerve
Which gluteal muscles abduct and medial rotate the thigh?
Gluteus maximus
Gluteus minimus
Tensor fasciae latae
Which muscles are innervated by the superior gluteal nerve?
Gluteus medius
Gluteus minimus
Tensor fasciae latae
Where does the tensor fasciae latae run?
From the Iliac spine to the iliotibial tract
What is the order of the gluteus muscles from superficial down?
Maximus, medius minimus
Why is the piriformis anatomically important?
It acts as an anatomical marker
It divides the greater sciatic foramen into two
Allows for sciatic nerve to be seen emerging from the inferior section.
Which 3 muscles lie inferior to the piriformis (in order)
Gemellus superior
Obturator internus
Gemellus inferior
Which nerve innervates the obturator internus and the superior gemelli?
The nerve to the obturator internus
Which nerve innervates the quadratus femoris and the gemelli inferior?
The nerve to the quadratus femoris
What is the action of the piriformis, obturator internus and gemelli?
Lateral rotation of extended thigh and abduction of flexed thigh
What is the action of the quadratus femoris?
Lateral rotation of the thigh
Which muscles prevent pelvic drop?
Gluteus medius and minimus
Which nerve roots make up the sacral plexus?
L4-S4
