Motivation Flashcards
Define motivation
The external stimuli and internal mechanisms that arouse and direct our behaviour
What are the two types of motivation?
Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation
What is extrinsic motivation and what are the two types of extrinsic motivation?
This comes from an outside source and is the drive we have to achieve external rewards
Tangible - e.g. winning a trophy, badge or certificate
Intangible - e.g. praise from a coach
What is intrinsic motivation?
This is the drive from within and includes the pride and satisfaction we might experience if we have a good game. Can be promoted by achieving personal goals such as PB in athletics
Why is intrinsic motivation the most important?
- It gives a performer a sense of control over performance
- Removal/failure to achieve an extrinsic reward may lead to a loss of motivation and so it is crucial for a performer to gain self satisfaction and create a desire to challenge themselves
What may happen if extrinsic rewards are not achieved or are achieved excessively?
- May damage/lead to loss of intrinsic motivation i.e. playing for only the extrinsic reward and not ‘love of the game’
- Creates too much pressure to earn rewards, leading to cheating
- Lose value if given out too often
- If not achieved at all the performer could give up
How is it possible for a coach to motivate their performers? (9 points)
1 - Variation in training 2 - make training enjoyable 3 - Allow success by grouping similar abilities together (i.e. handicap) 4 - Set 'SMARTER' targets 5 - Use role models 6 - Avoid punishment for novices 7 - Use reinforcement/praise 8 - Use external rewards/prizes 9 - Provide feedback/knowledge of performance
