Potent analgesic that alters the perception of pain - it acts on the CNS by binding with opioid receptors in the brain

- Altered level of consciousness
- Respiratory depression
- Hypotension

Significant pain
What are the contraindications for administering Morphine? (4)
- Known severe allergic reaction
- Renal failure
- Patients < 1 year old
- Pregnant women > 20 weeks gestation in labour
What are the precautions to consider when considering administering Morphine? (7)
- Elderly patients
- Hypotension
- Known narcotic addiction
- Respiratory tract burns
- Chest pain of a cardiac nature
- Respiratory depression / failure
- Concurrent MAOI therapy
