What is the drug classification of Midazolam?
Benzodiazepine
What is the action of Midazolam?
CNS depressant that enhances the action of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) - this results in sedation, amnesia, hypnosis and anaesthesia
What schedule is Midazolam classified under?
Schedule 4 (Restricted Drugs)
What are the side effects of Midazolam?
- Hypertension
- Respiratory depression especially when associated with other CNS depressants including alcohol and narcotics
What are the indications for administering Midazolam?
Generalized seizures/ focal seizures (GCS < 12)
What are the contraindications for Midazolam?
Known severe allergic reaction
What are the precautions to consider when administering Midazolam?
- Can cause severe respiratory depression in patients with COPD
- Elderly, chronic renal failure, congestive heart failure and shock (use reduced dose)
- Respiratory tract burns
When should the dosage be reduced?
- Elderly patients
- Patients with chronic renal failure
- Patients with congestive heart failure
- Patients suffering from shock
What is the onset time for IM administration?
5 - 15 minutes
What is the onset time for IV administration?
1 - 3 minutes
What is the onset time for NAS administration?
1 - 3 minutes
