Action of morphine
Binds with opid receptors in CNS
Alters pain perception, emotional response to pain.
Treatment for relief of moderate to severe pain acute or chronic pain, analgesia during labor
Dose for morphine
5-10 mg q3-4h PRN
Side effects of morphine
N & V, dizziness, drowsiness, facial flushing, constipation, hypotension, sedation, diaphoresis
Contraindications
Acute or severe asthma, GI obstruction, paralytic ileus, severe hepatic/renal impairment, severe respiratory depression

Nursing interventions for morphine
Pt needs to be in recumbent position b4 receiving Rx
Assess onset, type, location, duration of pain
Obtain vs before & after Rx
If RR is below 12, withhold Rx, contact MD
Check output
Teaching for morphine
Rx should be taken b4 pain fully returns Discomfort with injection Become tolerance dependent Avoid alcohol, other CNS drugs Report to MD if ineffective pain control, constipation, urinary retention
