Action

A

Helps with the formation of of hemoglobin, myoglobin, enzymes. Promotes effective erythropoiesis (producing red blood cells) & transport, utilization of oxygen.
Uses: prevention, tx, of iron defiency anemia due to adequate diet, malabsorption, pregnancy & blood loss.

Contraindications

A

Hemochromatosis (too much iron in body) hemolytic anemia (anemia due to hemolysis, which is the breakdown of red blood cells)

Nursing interventions

A

Assess nutritional status, dietary jc, monitor serum iron, total binding capacity, hemoglobin, monitor BM, assess for fatigue, irritability, pallor, HA)
Do not take within 2 hours of other Rx, eggs, milk, cereal, coffee, tea or milk
