Major depressive episode

A

Persists 2 weeks
5 symptoms must be present
-depressed mood loss of interest in activities.
-Depressed mood most of the day nearly every day
-diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities. feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt.
-psychomotor agitation or retardation,
-loos or increase in appetitie , significant weight loss or gain, fatigue or loss of energy, insominia or hypersomnia, reduced ability to think or concnetrate, indecisiiiiveness, suicidal ideation

Manic Episode

A

1 week or longer which the mood is abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive or irritable.
At least three symptoms(four if mood is only irritable)
-increased goal-directed activity or psychomotor agitation, flight of ideas, decreased need for sleep, grandiosity, restlessness, distractibility, involvement in pleasurable activities with high risk. impairment in occupational functioning, or need to be hospitalized to prevent self harm or the presence of psychotic features

Hypomanic Episode

A

symptoms of manic episode last for at least four days. The episode represents a clear change in mood and functioning but is not sufficiently severe to cause marked impairment or require hospitalization and an absence of psychotic symptoms.

Mixed episode

A

Rapidly alternating symptoms of manic and depressive episodes that last at least 1 week. Causes marked impairment, may require hospitalization and may include psychotic symptoms.

Major dpressive disorder

A

Dx in the presence of one or more episodes with a history of no manic, hypomanic or mixed episodes. When only 1 episode appropriate disagnosis is MDD, SIngle episode. 2 + is MDD recurrent. The psychotic episodes occur exclusively during mood disturbance.

Dysthymic Disorder

A

Chronically depressed mood most of the time for 2 years. Never a period of more than 2 months symptom free. Depressive symptoms not sever enough to meet Major depressive episode (in adolescence need only last a year).

Bipolar I Disorder

A

The occurrence of 1 or more manic episodes without a history of one or more major depressive episodes, 6 types of Bipolar I disorders (check DSM IV).

A

At least one major depressive episode and one hypomanic episode. The individual has never had a manic or mixed episode.

Cyclothymic Disorder

A

Presence of fluctuating hypomanic symptoms and numerous periods of depressive symptoms. Symptoms cannot be serious enough to meet the criteria for Major Depressive or Manic Disorders. Duration must be 2 years for adults and 1 year for children or adolescents.
