Learning Disorders (LD)
2 or more standard deviations below expected on achievement tests. Accompanied by general impairments in general intellectual and adaptive functioning. LD is a life span diagnosis.
Mental retardation
IQ of 70 below
Concurrent deficits or impairments in adaptive functioning (work, health, safety, self care)
Mild-50-70-can get about 6th grade education equivalent
Vocational abilities may be developed, can support self with some guidance and supervision
Moderate- 35-40 to 50-55 Communication skills and academic skills up to average 2nd or 3rd grade . skilled an semi-skilled vocation is sometimes possible
Severe 20-25 to 35-40 May learn to talk and read simple words. Basic skills for self-care are usually achieveable. May perform simple tasks under supervision
Profound - below 20-25
Etiology generally neurological extenisve training for minimal self care skills.
Mental retardation is not static and need not be life long in some cases. Educatoin and training can improve IQ scores.
IN 30-40% etiology is unknown
Developmental Coordination Disorder
Significant impairment in the development of motor coordination.
Communication Disorders
Expressive, Mixed receptive-expressive, and language disorders as well as stutterin are all included
Pervasive Developmental Disorders
Sever impairment in communication and social interaction.
Autistic diosrder, Aspergers , Rhett’s Childhood disintegrative and Pervasive Developmental Disorder NOS
Autism
Seem obilibious to others75% are also mentally retarded. 4-5 times more in males, best outcomes expected for those that speak by age 5, an IQ over 70 and late onset of symptoms
Attention deficit and Disruptive behavior disorders
ADHD, Conduct disorder, ODD (learn the differences)
Feeding and eating disorders of infancy or early childhood
Pica, rumination disorder (regurgitating and rechewing food), feeding disorder
TIC disorders
Can be motor or vocal,
Tourette’s disorder
Chronic motor or vocal tic disorder, and transient tic disorder
Elimination Disorder
encopresis and enuresis
Other disorders of infnacy, childhood or adolescences
Separation Anxiety disorder, reactive attachment disorder (usually related to pathogenic care, the child either fails to respond to social cues or is indiscriminately social) Sterotypic Movement Disorder (rocking, head banging)
