Module 6: The Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
main brain structure (hemispheres & lobes)
2 hemispheres each with 4 lobes (frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal)
motor cortex
at rear of frontal cortex (headband area); very specific parts are responsible for movement (localization)
somatosensory cortex
processes information from skin senses and body part movement
visual cortex
rear of brain; receives input from eyes
auditory cortex
above ears; receives info from ears
association area
areas in all frontal lobes enable judgment; damage results in different losses
Phineas Gage
a large iron rod was driven through his head, destroying much of his brain’s left frontal lobe, and that injury’s reported effects on his personality and behavior over the remaining years of his life
neroplasticity
some neural tissues can reorganize after damage; not the same as before still
split brain hemisphere
hemispheres are isolated by cutting the corpus callosum
intatct brain
data is quickly transmitted to the other side through corpus callosum
left side
quick exact interpretations of language
right side
making inferences, modulating speech, and facilitating self-awareness
