Psychotic Disorders
common symptom of hallucination(senses) and/or delusions(thoughts/beliefs)
Schizophrenia
psychological disorder characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and/or diminished, inappropriate emotional expression
symptoms: disturbed perceptions, disorganized thinking and speech, diminished and inappropriate emotions and actions
chronic schizophrenia (process schizophrenia)
form of schizophrenia in which symptoms usually appear by late adolescence or early adulthood.
as people age, psychotic episodes last longer and recovery periods shorten
acute schizophrenia (reactive schizophrenia)
form of schizophrenia that can begin at any age
often a response to an emotionally traumatic event
has extended recovery periods
Brain abnormalities
Brain chemistry: excessive number of dopamine receptors
Abnormal brain activity and anatomy: Problems with several brain regions and their interconnections, Low activity in frontal lobes, More rapid brain tissue
loss
Prenatal Environment and risk for schizophrenia
Low birth weight, lack of oxygen during delivery, maternal prenatal nutrition, mid pregnancy viral infection
genetic factors
▪ Odds of being diagnosed with schizophrenia are nearly 1 in 100 but 1 in 10 for those individuals with a diagnosed family member.
▪ Adopted children’s risk is related to biological parent.
▪ Emergence of disease influenced by many genes.
▪ Epigenetic factors influence gene expression.
