National Drug Code (NDC) Numbers
A unique 3 segment, 10 digit number assigned to each drug product and is useful to verify that the correct product has been chosen
First Segment
Labeler Code, assigned by the FDA to a specific manufacturer or labeling distributor
Second Segment
Product code, assigned by the labeler to a specific strength, dosage form and formulation of drug
Third Segment
Package code, assigned by the labeler to a specific package size and type
Lot numbers
Sometimes called batch numbers
Serve as a reference code from which the complete history of the manufacture, processing, packing, holding, and distribution of a batch or lot of drug products.
- A lot is produced over a short period of time
- can be any combination of numbers, letters and symbols
Expiration dates
Determined by the manufacturer based on stability testing
Dependent upon proper storage conditions
Formatting may be mm/dd/yy, mm/yy, mm/yyyy
Drug manufacturer
Invents medications through research and development and produces meds
Distributors
Serve as whole salers for purchase and delivery by pharmacies and institutions
Reverse Distributors
Coordinate returns and disposal of drugs and drug waste
Expired drugs in their original sealed, manufacturer packaging
Return to manufacturer or distributor
Expired drugs that are opened
Reverse distributor
Damaged drug products
Distributor
Dispensable product
Return to a distributor
Non- dispensable or expired product
Destroyed by the pharmacy or returned through a reverse distributor
Other return considerations
Any destruction of medications in the pharmacy should follow EPA requirements
Drugs that have left the pharmacy and have been returned should not be recirculated, even if unopened and unexpired.
