Module 4 ch 4 Flashcards
Converting units
when converting from one unit to another the simplified method of cross multiplication can usually be used
Converting within the metric system
When converting within the metric system you can set up a proportion to cross multiply
A similar approach to move the decimal point based on the value of the prefix
Ex: Move 3 spaces to the left when converting from mg to g
milliequivalent
A way to measure electrolytes
Drug concentration as a percentage
If its w/w write it as grams out of a hundred grams
if it v/v write it as milliliters out of a hundred milliliters
Drug concentration as a ratio
1:1000 solution is needed for 20 mg of epinephrine.
1000 ml/1000 mg= x/20 mg
Express the 1:1000 epinephrine solution as a percentage concentration of epinephrine
1 g/ 1000 ml= x/ 100 ml
U-100
100 units per ml
U-500
500 units per ml
Weight based doses
Dosing is often expressed as a dose per weight. Kg is the weight unit of measure generally used, so make sure you convert from lbs first.
1 kg/2.2 lbs= x Kg/44 lbs
Calculating Med Quantity
Must be able to calculate the quantity of medication needed to fulfill a prescription or medication
Be careful to ensure the correct units for each calculation step
40 mg for 3 days= 40 mg/ 10 mg= 4 tablets
20 mg for 3 days= 20 mg/10 mg= 2 tablets
10 mg for 3 days= 10 mg/10 mg= 1 tablet
Calculating medication quantity with drops
How many days will a 7.5 mL bottle of cirpodex suspension last for a prescription to give 4 drops in each ear twice daily.
20 drps/1 ml= x drops/7.5 ml= 150 drops
4 drops x 2 x 2= 16
150 drops/ 16= 9.375 or 9 days
Infusion rates
An order reads to give 100 ml of 5% dextrose over 10 minutes. How many mL/ min should the infusion pump be set to?
100 ml/ 10 min= x ml/ 1 min
10 ml
Alligation
On occasion you may need to make solution with a concentration percentage in between the available concentrations in stock
