Controlled Substance Act
-Signed in 1970
-Led to the creation of the DEA

Why would a substance be controlled
-Evidence that individuals are taking in high doses and is a danger
-Significant diversion of the drug from legitimate distribution channels
-Drug is closely related to another drug that is dangerous
-Individuals are taking the drug on their own volition

DEA
Schedule 1
-High Potential for Abuse and no use medically
EX: Heroin, GHB, LSD, Marijuana, Methaqualone
Schedule 2
-High potential for abuse and it can lead to severe physical or psychological dependence
EX: Morphine, PCP, Fentanyl, Cocaine, Demerol, Methadone, Oxycodone, Meth
Schedule 3
Less potential for abuse and leading to low or moderate physical dependence or high psychological dependence
-Accepted Medical Use
-Codeine with Acetaminophen, Steroids, Ketamine
Schedule 4
Less potential for Abuse than 3 and limited physical or psychological dependence.
EX: Benzodiazepines
Schedule 5
-Lowest potential for abuse
-Some physical or Psychological dependence
-Over the counter
Ex: Cough Medicine
Registering with DEA
Required for any individual handling or intending to handle a controlled substance

-9 Characters
-2 letter is the first letter of the last name
Prescription of controlled substance
-Date
-Full patient name and address
-Prescriber name, address, and dea number
-Drug name, strength, Dosage form
-Directions
-Number of Refills
-Signature
Schedule 2 prescriptions
Must be signed and written by the prescriber and cannot be refilled
-Written prescription must be submitted within 7 days
Schedule 3 and 4 prescriptions
Can be prescribed via writing or oral order and can be refilled up to 5 times within 6 months
Schedule V prescriptions
-Must be 18 or older
-On record
-Show ID
Schedule 2 transer
Cannot be transferred between pharmacies
