Module 22: Muscular System Flashcards
Smooth muscle is found where?
Digestive tract, blood vessels, bladder, airways, and uterus
Where is skeletal muscle found?
Attached to bone and causes movement of the body – voluntary
What is a skeletal muscle cell called?
Muscle fibre
Muscle fibres are grouped in bundles called
Fascicles
What is the name of the connective tissue that surrounds the muscle outside the epimysium?
Fascia
What is the sarcolemma?
The plasma membrane surrounding each fibre
What is the name for the cytoplasm of the cell?
Sarcoplasm
Where calcium ions stored?
Sarcoplasmic reticulum
Where is glycogen and oxygen stored?
Myofibrils
What are thick filaments composed of?
A protein called myosin
What are thin filaments composed of?
A protein called actin
What gives skeletal muscle is striated appearance?
The arrangement of actin and myosin
The connection between a motor neuron and a muscle fibre is called
Neuromuscular junction
What is the length-tension relationship?
The strength of the contraction depends upon the length of the fibres before the contraction begins
What is the name for the neuron and all the fibres it stimulates? And what does it consist of?
Motor unit - can consist of a few fibers… Or a few hundred.
(These fibres are scattered throughout the muscle rather than bunched together, allowing the contraction to be spread over a wide area)
