Module 11 - Autonomic Flashcards
Autonomic Nervous System
Autonomic Nervous System
Relay b/w CNS and organs
Unconscious
Preganglionic neuron of CNS synapses to Postganglionic neuron of PNS
Sensory from special and somatic senses
Motor neurons to visceral body activities to increase or decrease
Motor Pathway
Motor pathway
Pre-ganglion – myelinated
Autonomic ganglion – synapse with multi neurons here
Post-ganglion – unmyelinated
Target organ
Sympathetic Neurotransmitters
Sympathetic Neurotransmitters
Sympathetic – Cholinergic neurons – acetylcholine – short and local Adrenergic neurons – norepinephrine – long and wide
Parasympathetic Neurotransmitters
Parasympathetic – acetylcholine
ANS controls
Controls:
Lungs
Heart
Smooth muscle
Exocrine and endocrine gland
Sympathetic
Sympathetic – “fight or flight” - Excite
Carries signal for body alert
Pre-ganglion in Spinal cord
Use ganglia for communication
Ganglia form a chain that extends alongside the spinal cord
One preganglionic neuron synapses on multiple Postganglionic neurons – amplify effect of the original synapse
Adrenal gland releases norepinephrine (sim to epinephrine) in blood
Control of your heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, urination and sweating, among other functions
Responding to danger or stress
Sympathetic Neurotransmitters Pre and Post
Pre-Neurotransmitter –acetylcholine
Post Neurotransmitter – norepinephrine
Sympathetic Reaction
Eyes – enlarge pupils – more light – better vision
Heart – increase rate – deliver more O2 to body
Lungs – relax airways – more O2 diffused in
Digestive – slow down – no energy wasted
Liver – used energy stores
Adrenal Glands
Adrenal gland releases norepinephrine (sim to epinephrine) in blood
Parasympathetic
Parasympathetic – “rest and digest” – inhibit
Return to homeostasis
Pre-ganglion in Brain and coccyx
Post-ganglion to organ
Parasympathetic Neurotransmitters Pre and Post
Pre-Neurotransmitter – acetylcholine
Post Neurotransmitter – acetylcholine
Parasympathetic Reaction
Eyes – constricts pupil – less light – normal vision
Heart – slows – resting
Lungs – constricts bronchi – normal diffusion of O2
Digestion – restarts
Liver – secretes bile again
Bladder – contract – want to go pee
