Module 1 Terminology Flashcards
Drug Half Life
The time required for half of a total drug amount to be eliminated from the body.
Bioavailability
The fraction or percentage of a drug that reaches the systemic circulation.
Hepatic First Pass
The phenomenon by which a drug first passes through the liver for degradation before distribution to the tissue
Protein binding
After absorption into the blood and lymph a drug may circulate throughout the body unbound (free drug) or bound to carrier proteins such as albumin.
Drug clearance
The most important pharmacokinetic parameter. Determines maintenance dose.
Drug elimination
Drug clearance and dose
requirements vary markedly throughout life.
Volume of distribution
The volume into which a drug appears to be distributed. Determines loading dose.
an unusual adverse or unexpected reaction that does not occur in most people, and is not representative of the known pharmacologic components of a drug.
Idiosyncratic drug reaction
a disease or adverse effect caused by medical treatment (in this case a drug).
Iatrogenic effect
when substance or drug dependence results in tolerance, withdrawal or both.
Physical dependence
a severe allergic reaction to a drug.
Anaphylaxis
