Module 1 (Systems and Body Cavities) Flashcards
How many major systems are there and what are they responsible for
10, responsible for the body’s functions
What are the 10 major systems
Skeletal
Muscular
Cardiovascular
Nervous
Endocrine
Lymphatic
Respiratory
Digestive
Urinary
Reproductive
Functions of the skeletal system
Holds the body together
Gives it shape
Protects organs and tissues
Provides anchor points for muscular system
3 types of muscles
Skeletal, smooth, cardiac
Function of the muscular system
Found throughout the body and facilitate movement
Functions of cardiovascular system
Delivers oxygen, white blood cells, hormones, and nutrients through the body
What makes up the nervous system
Brain, spinal cord, cranial and spinal nerves
Functions of the nervous system
Communication network of nerve cells
Transmits information and coordinates bodily functions
Function of endocrine system
Series of glands that use information from the nervous system to help regulate the body’s processes
Other name for lymphatic system
Immune system
Functions of lymphatic system
Collection of lymph nodes and vessels that help regulate the body’s defences
What pathway does the lymphatic system use to transmit information about effected areas
Neural pathways and sends healing agents (WBC) via the bloodstream
Functions of the respiratory system
Group of passageways and organs that extract oxygen from the air
How does the respiratory system work
Air enters through nasal cavities
Travels down the throat then to the lungs
Lungs extract oxygen and expel CO2
Function of the digestive system
30 foot series of organs that convert food into fuel/energy
How does the digestive system work
Food enters the mouth then moves to the esophagus, stomach and intestines
Nutrients are absorbed into the body while solid waste is expelled through anal canal
What does the urinary system include
Kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra
Function of the urinary system
Maintains the body’s electrolyte levels and filters waste from the blood
What does the reproductive system include
Ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and vagina (female)
Testes and a sperm channel (male)
Function of reproductive system
Responsible for creating life
What are the infrastructure systems
Skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, and nervous
They facilitate the other systems
Ventral body cavity
Front
Can be divided into two cavities
What are the two body cavities that the ventral body cavity can be divided into
Thoracic (above diaphragm)
Abdomino-pelvic (below diaphragm)
Superior mediastinum
Contains esophagus and thrachea
Pericardial
Contains the heart
Pleural
Contains the lungs
Abdominal
Contains digestive viscera
Pelvic
Contains the urinary bladder and reproductive organs
Dorsal back cavity
Back
Can be divided into two cavities
Contains brain and spinal cord (CNS)
Cranial
Houses the brain
Vertebral
Houses the spinal cord
