mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
what happens in mitosis
A
division and distribution of the cells DNA to its two daughter cells
2
Q
what type of cells undergo mitosis
A
somatic cells
3
Q
what is karyokinesis
A
nuclear division
4
Q
what is cytokinesis
A
cell division
5
Q
what are the phases of mitosis
A
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis
6
Q
what happens in prophase
A
- chromosomes condense
- centriole pairs separate and move towards the opposite poles of the cell
- spindle apparatus forms and nuclear membrane dissolves
7
Q
what happens in metaphase
A
- centriole pairs are at opposite poles of the cell
- fibers of spindle apparatus attach to each chromatid at the kinetochore
- spindle fibers align the chromosomes at center of the cell forming the metaphase plate
8
Q
what happens in anaphase
A
- centromeres split so each chromatid has its own centromere, allowing sister chromatids to separate
- sister chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell by shortening of spindle fibers
9
Q
what are spindle fibers made of
A
microtubules
10
Q
what happens in telophase
A
- spindle apparatus disappears
- nuclear membrane forms around each set of newly formed chromosomes
- chromosomes uncoil
11
Q
what happens in cytokinesis in animal cells
A
- a cleavage furrow forms and cell membrane indents along the equator of the cell, eventually pinching the cell and separating the nuclei
12
Q
what happens in cytokinesis in plant cells
A
a cell plate forms between the 2 nuclei , splitting the plant cell in half
