5-HT agonist on small peripheral nerves, suppresses release of sensory neuropeptides
less vasoconstricting than ergotamine
toxicities related to vasospasm (many)
coronary artery vasospasm, arrhythmias, angina, MI, stroke, seizures, bowel ischemia, dizziness, weakness, myalgia
triptan contraindications (many)
breast feeding, heart disease, CVD, CAD, DM, HTN, PVD, pregnancy, renal impairment, seizures, smoking
Ergotamine MOA
acts on 5-HT receptors, less specific than Imitrex
