MicroVascular Flashcards
What are the three types of blood circulatory systems?
- Systemic
- Pulmonary
- Portal
How many liters are in the blood circulatory system?
3L
How many liters are in the Lymphatic circulatory system?
3L
What are the layers of the blood vessel?
- Tunica Intima
- Tunica Media
- Tunica Adventitia
What is contained within the tunica intima?
- endothelial cells
- basal lamina
- subendothelial space (Elastic Fibers & fibroblasts)
- Internal elastic lamina (Elastic fibers)
What is contained within in the tunica media?
- Smooth muscle cells
- elastic Fibers
- collagen III reticular fibers
What is contained within the tunica adventitia?
- Fibroblasts & Collagen I fibers
- some smooth muscle
- Sympathetic Nerves
- Vasa Vasorum
What makes the endothelial cell frictionless/non-thrombotic?
- Negatively charged surface
- (Blood is also negatively charged)
What are Vasa Vasorum?
vessels of the vessel
Where are vasa vasorum located?
tunica adventitia
Can smooth muscle cells create fibers in the tunica media?
-yes
What is the terminal end of an arteriole?
Metarteriole
What is the purpose of the subendothelial space in the Tunica Intima?
allows for distortion of the endothelial layer during systole
Where is the internal elastic lamina seen?
-the Tunica intima of large vessels
What causes the rebounding (diastole) in large elastic arteries?
The tunica media elastic fibers (subendothelial space)
What direction are the elastic fibers in the tunica intima oriented in large elastic arteries?
Longitudinal
What direction are the elastic fibers in the tunica media oriented in large elastic arteries?
Circumferential
What are the four forces that act in capillaries?
- Hydrostatic
- Osmotic
- Diffusion Gradients
- Transcytosis
What are fenestrae?
“windows” in capillary endothelial cells that allow exchange of nutrients/wastes
What do portal vessels do?
connect one capillary bed to another
Where in the vasculature do white blood cells enter damaged or infected tissues?
Postcapillary venules
What is an easy way to tell a vein from an artery?
-the lumen diameter will exceed the thickness of the wall
What are the three types of capillaries?
- Continuous
- Fenestrated
- Sinusoids (discontinuous)
